1. Performance and use:
Colorless liquid. Industrial decahydronaphthalene produced by hydrogenation of naphthalene, a mixture of cis and trans isomers. Insoluble in water, miscible with ethanol, ether, acetone and benzene. Similar to methanol odor, the vapor is purple. Flash point 57℃.
Uses can be used as a solvent for paints, used to extract fats and waxes, instead of turpentine used in shoe polish, floor wax manufacturing, can be used with benzene and ethanol to form a mixture, as a fuel for internal combustion engines.
Uses Used as a liquid for refractive index determination, also used as a solvent Production Methods Industrially by catalytic hydrogenation of naphthalene in the presence of a nickel catalyst to obtain an equal mixture of the two isomers.
If you need a purer isomer, industrial grade decahydronaphthalene can be washed with concentrated sulfuric acid until the acid layer is colorless. Decompression distillation, with a reflux ratio close to 145:1 in a tower of 130 theoretical plates, yields the cis-isomer with a purity of 99.93% by weight, while a reflux ratio of 160:1 in a tower of 200 theoretical plates yields the trans-isomer with a purity of 99.97%.
