Slightly soluble in cold water, slowly soluble in acid. Its trihydrate is colourless needle crystal, melting point 1Chemicalbook65°C, relative density 1.850. Its pentahydrate is white monoclinic crystal, relative density 1.73, decomposed by heating in air. It can be obtained from magnesium salt aqueous solution by adding carbon dioxide while adding sodium carbonate, and the hydrate can be obtained by drying the latter at 50℃ or below anhydrous.

1.Performance and use:

It is basic hydrated magnesium carbonate or ortho hydrated magnesium carbonate. Due to the different conditions of crystallisation, there are light and heavy products, generally light. The light ones are:MgCO3-H2O.The heavy ones are:5MgCO3-Mg(OH)2-3H2O,5MgCO3-2Mg(OH)2-7H2O,4MgCO3-Mg(OH)2and3Mg(OH)2-4H2O.It is a trihydrate salt at room temperature. Light magnesium carbonate is white loose powder or friable lump. Odourless, relative density 2.2, melting point Chemicalbook350℃. Stable in air, heated to 700 ° C to produce carbon dioxide, generating magnesium oxide, almost insoluble in water, but in water to cause a slight alkaline reaction. Insoluble in ethanol, can be dissolved by dilute acid and bubbling. Light magnesium carbonate is mainly used as filler and reinforcing agent for transparent or light-coloured rubber products, it hardly changes the refractive index of rubber itself after mixing with rubber, and it can enhance the abrasion resistance, flexural resistance and tensile strength of rubber. It is mainly used as additives for paints, inks and coatings, and is also widely used in toothpaste, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
