Ammonium persulfate
CAS No.7727-54-0
Alias:AP;APS;AMMONIUM PEROXODISULFATE;AMMONIUM PEROXODISULPHATE;AMMONIUM PEROXYDISULFATE;AMMONIUM PEROXYDISULPHATE;AMMONIUM PERSULFATE;AMMONIUM PERSULFATE, POUCHES
Molecular formula:H8N2O8S2
Molecular weight:228.2
Structural formula:
1. Performance and use:
Ammonium persulfate is also known as ammonium peroxydisulfate. Molecular formula: (NH4)2S2O8, one of the commonly used polymerisation agents in the preparation of polyacrylamide gels. Colourless or slightly light green plate or prismatic monoclinic crystals, or white crystalline powder, odourless. Relative molecular mass 228.21, relative density 1.982, decomposed at 120℃. In dry air, not decomposed at room temperature, but in humid air, slowly decomposed. 120 ℃ decomposition release oxygen, and transformed into ammonium metabisulfate [(NH4)2S2O7]. Soluble in water, solubility: 58.2 at 0℃, 74.8 at 15Chemicalbook.5℃. 77 at 25℃. aqueous solution is acidic reaction, greatly affected by temperature, 5% aqueous solution does not decompose at 20℃, but at 40-50℃, after one day and night, 2.2%, 7.7% after 3 days, and 37.2% after one week decomposition. After decomposition to generate acidic ammonium sulfate and hydrogen peroxide, has a strong oxidising property, a contact with easily oxidised organic matter and metals and their salts (such as platinum black, lead, silver, copper, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, manganese, iron, nickel, cobalt and so on) will decompose. Rat oral LD50530~1260mg/kg.Toxicity
Used as analytical reagent, photographic fixer and reducing agent.
Used as food preservative, oxidising agent and initiator of polymer.
Used in chemical industry as raw material for manufacturing persulfate and hydrogen peroxide, co-polymerisation agent for organic polymerisation and initiator for vinyl chloride monomer polymerisation. It is also used as bleaching agent in the oil and fat Chemicalbook soap industry. It is also used as corrosive agent in metal plate etching and cutting, and oil extraction in petroleum industry. Food grade is used as wheat modifier, beer yeast mould inhibitor.
Wheat flour modifier (limit ≤ 0.3g/kg, Japanese standard, 1999); beer yeast mould inhibitor (limit 0.1%, FAO/WHO, 1984).
Testing and determination of manganese, iron and steel analysis, oxidising agents.
