1. Performance and use
Sodium hexametaphosphate is a type of sodium metaphosphate polymer, also known as "poly sodium metaphosphate", "poly sodium metaphosphate", "sodium metaphosphate glass body", "Graham salt". It appears as a colorless transparent glassy solid or white powder, with high solubility in water but slow dissolution rate. The aqueous solution exhibits an acidic reaction. The complexes of divalent metal ions are more stable than those of monovalent metal ions and are easily hydrolyzed into orthophosphate in warm water, acid, or alkaline solutions. Sodium hexametaphosphate has strong hygroscopicity and begins to become sticky after absorbing moisture. For certain metal ions (such as calcium, magnesium, etc.), they have the ability to form soluble complexes and can be used to soften water. Precipitation can also be generated with lead and silver ions, which dissolve in excess sodium hexametaphosphate solution to form complexes. Barium salts can also form complexes with sodium hexametaphosphate. Used as an efficient water softener for power plants, locomotive and vehicle boilers, a detergent additive, a control or anti-corrosion agent, a cement hardening accelerator, a streptomycin purification agent, and a cleaning agent for the fiber industry and dyeing industry. Used as a sedative in medicine, and as a preservative, stabilizer, and fruit juice precipitant in the food industry. In the petroleum industry, it is used for rust prevention of drilling pipes and to control the viscosity of mud during oil drilling. It also has certain uses in textile printing and dyeing, tanning, papermaking, color film, soil analysis, radiochemistry, and analytical chemistry departments. According to GB2760-1996 in China, sodium hexametaphosphate is allowed to be used as a food additive (water retention agent), which can be used in canned food, fruit juice drinks, dairy products, and soy products; Also used as a dye dispersant and water treatment agent.
